With Christmas right around the corner and friends and family members flying to and from all around the world just to be with loved ones for the holiday season, airports will be jammed, lines will be long, and tempers will be high as frustration peaks when a snowstorm causes delays or too many people are waiting for an overbooked flight. People usually say that it takes as many days to get over jet lag as however many hours out of your regular time zone you are. So if you fly from Florida to California it would be three days, but if you fly from New York to Paris it would be six days and six days in Paris would be too long to be jet lagged, if you ask me. Instead of waiting it out, staying up watching late night TV, or stocking up on energy drinks, try these natural remedies to prevent feeling like a zombie during this festive season:

Sleep: It may be obvious to some, but getting a good night’s rest before a flight can actually help keep your rest schedule on track. Turn off electronics and dim the lights, you can even take a bath before bed to ensure a restful night’s sleep.

Herbs: There are anti-jet lag formulas on the market with chemicals and altered levels of energy and a bunch of ingredients no one can pronounce but natural options are now available and come highly recommended. Root extracts from vegetables, fruits, and plants like daisies, chamomile, club moss, and others are used to prevent sleeplessness, nausea, anxiety, digestive discomfort, and restlessness from trying to adapt to a new environment.

Water: Hydrotherapy is often used to stave off jet lag because the lack of fresh air and size of the cups on plane flights; having a large water bottle these days in an airport is practically a luxury. One hour before the flight, holistic advisors say to drink a cup of water infused with rosemary oil or consume ginger capsules throughout your day to help stave off any discomfort you may feel about flying which can aggravate jet lag. Most of us forget to drink on planes for fear of having to use the restroom while the seatbelt sign is on or because those bathrooms are very small and uncomfortable. Whatever the reason, water is one of the most important necessities in life and especially on a plane when your muscles are relaxed for hours you need hydration the most so drink up.

Move Around: Striking a yoga pose or two a couple of days before your flight to prepare your body for the mostly motionless day of your trip spent on the plane. During the flight, doctors recommend getting up once per hour and taking a quick stroll up and down the aisles to keep your blood circulating. Blood clots (also called DVT for Deep Vein Thrombosis) can develop from inactivity, especially on overnight or European flights and are dangerous because they travel through your body and can get stuck in your lungs or worse, go to your heart or brain. If you can find a yoga or stretch class in your destination city, bring a resistance band with you to stretch in your room, or just take a walk around the block to keep your body active during your vacation.

Even though these aren’t the only ways to get rid of jet lag, they are the best natural cures without turning to sleeping pills or unhealthy alternatives to get through the most hectic part of the holidays…getting where you need to go to be with the ones you love.
