With global stock markets heading for the best monthly performance since last July, gold has found it increasingly difficult to hold onto recent gains.

The MSCI World index which monitors stocks from around the world rose more than eight percent during July as better economic and corporate data helped sentiment. Consumer confidence readings are still on the low side which continues to indicate a bumpy recovery ahead. Robert Schiller, a well known professor at Yale University, sees the risk of a US double dip recession as being above 50 percent.

The positive sentiment from stocks, where more than 77 percent of companies in the S&P 500 Index reported earnings above expectations, helped drive the yield on corporate bonds to a six year low. This according to Bloomberg triggered a record USD 85.7 billion issuance of debt in July with investors snapping up the relative high yield compared to governments bonds.

The Reuters Jefferies CRB index rose 1 percent on the week and returned 4 percent in July, the best monthly performance since May 2009. Gains were recorded across different sectors. The best performing markets were sugar, coffee, wheat, natural gas and palladium with losses in other energies and gold pulling in the opposite direction.
The price of gold dropped below the May low and has come close to the important 200 day moving average support at 1,150. This is the level that many long term investors view as the level that needs to hold. The speculative long position on Comex has been reduced by 27 percent over the past three weeks and another reduction is expected this week. Meanwhile Gold held in Exchange Traded Funds also saw a reduction albeit only by one million ounces, a mere 1.5 percent of total known holdings.

The next couple of weeks will be very important as to the near term direction of gold. The worry is that a move below 1,150 could trigger a much larger correction than the 100 dollars seen so far. Supportive news this week was a pick-up in physical demand with jewelers taking advantage of the recent drop in the price of both gold and the dollar. The strength of the global recovery is still debatable as the Yen, often viewed as a safe haven, strengthen against the dollar and the euro.

Slowdown ahead

Turning. While global GDP growth accelerated up until recently, there is now mounting evidence pointing to a tangible slowdown. The OECD leading economic indicators, one of the most reliable and most forwardlooking yardsticks for the global economy, are already heading clearly south (cf. chart below). Their still high level does, however, argue against a double-dip recession.

US. The slowdown is already evident in the hard numbers. Recent economic indicators were generally weaker than expected. In the second quarter, real GDP probably grew at an annual rate of only 2¼% (IV/09: +5.6%). For the first half of 2011, we expect only 2% (pages 3-5).

Fed. The central bank is also becoming increasingly concerned about the economy, since the retarding effects of the inventory cycle and the expiring fiscal programs will soon be joined by the headwind from higher taxes. There is, therefore, a growing risk that the Fed will initiate its tightening cycle later than projected so far. It may possibly wait until summer next year.

EMU. In Europe, the spring quarter should have still been pretty good. That, however, is attributable solely to a technical reaction to the poor start to the year because of the cold winter weather and not to the recovery of final domestic demand. But GDP growth is set to slow down, although maybe not as pronounced or as early as projected given the recent upbeat readings of PMIs as well as the German Ifo climate index.

ECB. The retarding effects of the inventory cycle and fiscal policy measures are being joined by external strains. This is increasing the risk that the ECB will also have to postpone the first rate hike, especially if today's bank stress test results disappoint investors (pages 6-7 & 8-9).

The euro lost ground yesterday, pulling back from 1.2460 to as low as 1.2285, following EUR/JPY as the yen strengthened on speculation European banks will struggle to raise money amid the debt region’s crisis. Forex: EUR/USD soars after Spanish debt auction and approaches 1.2400
Euro pullback from yesterday's high at 1.2355 has found support at 1.2245 low ahead of the European session, and the pair has soared about 150 pips higher, reaching 3-weeks high at 1.2390 area on good demand for Spanish debt.

Spain has managed to sell EUR3.479 billion worth of long-term government bonds on today's auction, which has restored confidence on the Euro area and the European currency.

The focus is now on the results of Spanish banks' stress test, due to be released later on the day, says Valeria Bednarik, collaborator at FXstreet.com: " Market attention is focused in Spain right now, and the stress test of it's banking system to be release shortly; optimism about the results, and the recent strong demand for Spanish bonds is boosting Euro, that approaches to 1.2400."

Accelerating growth in Asia saves the week for commodities

A relatively quiet week in the market place with riskier assets getting a boost from stronger than expected economic data out of China, Australia and Japan.

As appetite for risk returned the dollar retraced some of its recent gains. Government debt sale by Spain and Italy was well received leading to a narrowing of spreads over German government bonds. This was still not enough to drive the Euro back above the important 1.2150 level versus the dollar indicating continued nervousness about the sovereign debt situation and the worry that it may spread east.

The Reuters Jefferies CRB Index had a good week rising 2.8 percent but stays stuck in a range between 247 and 259. Soft commodities such as sugar and coffee both rose more than seven percent while broad based gains seen across the other sectors. Natural gas reached its initial upside target at 5.00 before running into profit taking losing one percent on the week.

WTI Crude oil rose 3.5 percent on the week with buyers returning as the dollar lost ground. The move above 75.80 proved short lived and range trading remains the favored strategy until further clarification about demand and the direction of the dollar becomes clearer. Retail sales in the U.S. came out weaker than expected putting the energy sector under some selling pressure into the weekend as worries about a double dip recession still lingers.

Technically WTI Crude for July delivery has still not managed to break any significant upside levels. Keep an eye out for a close above 75.80 which would signals renewed strength towards 78.50. Support is located at 72.75 followed by 69.50.

Gold rallied to a new record at 1,252 but resistance held and profit taking followed. Total holdings in gold ETFs continues to rise at an amazing rate reaching 65.4 million ounces or more than 2,000 tons.

Warren Buffett this week joined George Soros in describing gold as being in a bubble situation. Soros who himself is long of gold, contrary to Buffett, back in January called gold the “ultimate asset bubble”. He also at the same time stated that it was great riding a bubble as even though they could be rather messy when they pop a lot of money could be made riding them.

If indeed the current situation can be described as a bubble it is also worth looking at the characteristics of a typical bull market bubble. The top of a bubble is usually marked by a final surge that explodes higher.
Considering gold is “only” up 12 percent year to date such a move remains to be seen. In the meantime weak long positions may head for the exit on a move below 1,195 while the long term investor probably will remain invested above the long term trend line support at 1,145.

We are cautious of further progress at this time given the unprecedented amount of funds invested in gold, especially through ETFs as mentioned. Going against the trend at this juncture is probably premature but investors should have an exit level defined should a sell off occur. Resistance at 1,250 is firm with a move above signaling an extension towards trend line resistance at 1,375. Support at 1,195 followed by 1,165 and 1,145.

The gold to silver ratio has decreased recently from 70 (Gold price / silver price) down to 67 signaling silver outperformance. This could continue, at least short term, as the silver chart looks less toppish with further room to go before major resistance is met.

The price of Corn finally found some support this week as the monthly supply and demand data from the USDA showed an unexpected drop of this year’s stockpiles. The single biggest contributor to this drop could be found in the rising ethanol production which is used as a fuel substitute. Currently US congress has set a limit of 10% ethanol mixed into petrol but major ethanol producers have asked regulators to increase this limit to 12%.

Falling prices due to near perfect growing conditions in the Midwest have been the main focus until now. The corn future for December delivery at one stage showed a loss for the year of 20% before finding support at 353, the September 2009 low.

This announcement lends further support to the long corn short wheat ratio trade. During the past month corn has outperformed wheat by 10 percent and with the ethanol story finally having an impact this outperformance look set to continue. One word of caution is news that Australia, the fourth largest wheat exporter, is facing a potential threat from the worst locust plaque in more than two decades.

Resistance on December corn can be found at 372 followed by 392 and 400 while support is at 353.

Robusta coffee which is used in instant coffee and blends rallied strongly Thursday and Friday on signs of reduced supplies from Vietnam. Exports from the world’s biggest grower of that variety fell 20% from a year earlier leaving European stockpiles lower. Arabica, the finer quality coffee, primarily from Brazil and traded in New York rose 7 percent on the back of the 11 percent gain reported on Robusta.

Having traded as low as 1,282 dollar per metric tons back in March the price for September robusta reached 1,538 on Friday as traders and hedgers scrambled for cover. Once the market stabilizes new sellers will probably emerge given the size of the recent rally and long term fundamentals which points to the market being well supplied.

Copper had its first decent weekly gains since the sell off began back in April. The weaker dollar looks like the main driver behind the move although Chinese export figures which jumped to a five year high also helped sentiment. Although we saw growth accelerating in the Asia this week, we are concerned that China will hit the brakes harder than the market currently forecast. Should this materialize we could see base metals suffer as we head towards Q3 and Q4. We see the risk of copper dropping quite substantially towards the end of the year, retracing much of the gains made since Q1 of 2009.

Eurodollar futures – It seems unlikely that Eurozone turmoil is responsible for the pullback in U.S. store sales. Weaker gas prices for one created one category of weakness while a cursory glance also shows that building materials sales fell after two previously strong months. Nevertheless, U.S. notes are higher by a half point futures-wise with the September contract trading at 120-11 to yield 3.26%. Gains for Eurodollar futures are accelerated at further maturities.

European bond markets – Markets bounced on the weakness in U.S. sales with the September German bund market jumping 36 ticks to 129.04. The rebound follows an upbeat view from the ECB on Thursday during which they promised to remain supportive of financial assets and institutions.

British gilt – Gilts are 61 ticks higher at 119.36 in the September contract although short sterling futures are making smaller advances as implied yields decline just two basis points. The 10-year yield slid to 3.50% as investors figured today’s poor manufacturing output reports coupled with forthcoming budget cuts needed to rein in the public deficit were a bad mix.

Japanese bonds – Japanese yields remained higher by three basis points after a Bank of Japan report failed to dumb-down growth expectations. The 10-year yield jumped to 1.217%.

Canadian bills – The pace of the yield decline in government bonds was half that of the U.S. The 10-year bond rose by 35 pips to 120.63 where the yield fell to 3.39 with the spread over treasuries now widening to 14 basis points.

Australian bills – The Aussie bond market fell after China’s inflation data fanned fears that the Chinese may act to cool growth further. Yields on 10-year government bonds rose five basis points to 5.39%.

False Health Claims on Cereal Cost Kellogg
Food manufacturer Kellogg has again been called on the carpet by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for making false claims on the front of one of its bestselling cereals: Rice Krispies. Advertising that the cereal improved children’s health has not been backed up by scientific evidence, much like its claim last year on Frosted Mini Wheats that they improved children’s attentiveness.

Many food choices are made with convenience in mind: working parents, school-aged children, extracurricular activities all add up to reaching for prepared food. Cereal is one of those common convenience items that can be found in just about every pantry. But what is actually in that cereal and how good it is for you can really only be determined by closely reading the Nutritional Data that is required on all processed food.

A study published earlier this year, conducted by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, shows that cereals marketed to our children have 85 percent more sugar, 65 percent less fiber, and 60 percent more sodium, not to mention the additional unnecessary calories that they add to the breakfast bowl. Regardless of health claims on the front of the package, consumers need to read the fine print to determine any actual benefits that their children will receive from such food.

Euro: risks outnumber the benefits

The last two weeks were not happy days for the euro. The aid package drawn up by heads of government and state over the weekend of 8/9 May with the support of the ECB and the International Monetary Fund only succeeded in stabilising the single currency briefly. There then followed seven days of decline, with EUR-USD crashing down at 1.2144 last Wednesday. Some of the dust has settled since then, and prices have recovered to around 1.24.

This calm resulted firstly from technical factors: EUR-USD was heavily oversold by any standards. Secondly, massive intervention by the Swiss National Bank to bolster the euro may also have played a role; the SNB is currently trying to keep EUR-CHF above 1.40. And in the short term, the euro may have been supported by some weaker US economic data and by signals from the Fed that a tightening of monetary policy is not an urgent priority for now.

Although the euro has stabilised for now, it remains extremely vulnerable to further declines in value. On the one hand, it is difficult to assess whether the rescue package will indeed function in an emergency. If, for instance, the national parliaments reserve the right to decide on support on a case-by-case basis, this package is less likely to restore confidence among investors. And the ECB’s promise to keep the sovereign debt market functioning by purchasing bonds also sounds half-hearted. That is why there are still latent fears of European government bonds defaulting.
This might explain why the demand for liquidity on the money markets has increased sharply again.

On the other hand, even if the tension on the bond markets subsides, the budgetary cuts will probably come at the expense of growth. This suggests that the ECB will continue its expansionary monetary policy and leave its low interest rates unchanged. Whatever happens, the euro has little to offer for investors for now.

However, the scenario “long spell of eurozone stagnation on account of tough austerity measures” is not necessarily the full picture. While tough consolidation would probably dampen domestic demand, the decline in the value of the euro is likely to bolster exports. In recent weeks, the euro has lost value not only against the US dollar but against most non-European currencies. On a trade-weighted basis, the euro has shed around 8.5 % in the year to date (EUR-USD by 13.7 %), according to ECB calculations. So for the first time since 2005, the euro’s external value is approaching a level that many economists would, at least roughly speaking, consider to be fair. This should boost international competitiveness and fuel exports, especially in a reasonably dynamic global economic environment.

European shares pull back off highs
European stocks rose this morning on the back of a late rally yesterday on Wall Street, however uncertainty and fears still linger regarding euro zone public debt and new trading bans in Germany. At the moment, major indices have pulled back from their morning highs with the German DAX slipping into the red at -0.27%. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute reviewed new cases of cancer in the lower stomach (also known as noncardia gastric cancer) that occurred from 1977 to 2006. They found over 39,000 cases in a sampling that represented a quarter of the American population. Overall, rates had declined across every age group and ethnic profile, except for those in the Caucasian 25-39 age group. This Gen Y group had a 70 percent increase in incidence of stomach cancer.

While this equates to only 1 per 200,000 people, it was a surprising finding, according to a statement made to Associated Press by Dr. Jaffer Ajani, a digestive cancer specialist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. While he acknowledged that it could be a statistical blip, it is worthy of further investigation and confirmation.

Cancer that occurs in the lower stomach is typically caused by H. pylori, a bacteria causing a chronic infection and, at times, ulcers. This type of cancer, more common in Asian countries, can be lined to high-salt diets and salt-preserved food. In my own backyard, Santa Clara County supervisors have banned the sale of toys in fast food kid’s meals. No more Star Wars figurines, mini Guitar Hero trinkets, or cute little furry creatures. They are going by the wayside, like the decoder rings and wind-up animals we used to find in cereal boxes. Open up a cardboard Happy Meal and all you get is food and…disappointment. This comes on the heels of protests across the country calling for the demise of Ronald McDonald, that mop-haired figurehead of fast food at the Golden Arches.

Kids have come to expect treats when they eat out. In fact, back in the day when I actually ate fast food, I used to order Happy Meals myself just to collect the toys for children who visited my house. I mean, if you are going to eat a hamburger anyway, why not get a bonus? While the intent is noble, to help eradicate childhood obesity, McDonald’s will continue to sell Happy Meals, as will all other fast food chains, but now the kid just gets the calories. The target needs to be the adults who buy the fast food, too often, for their children.

Happy Meals and its brethren are available with healthier options, such as low-fat milk or apple juice instead of soda, and apple slices instead of fries. A better solution would be to change the menu to reflect these choices. All kid’s meals will come with milk and apples, no soda and no fries. Period. And they get a toy. You don’t want apples and milk? Then buy off the regular menu. The kids have a choice, as do their parents. If they want a toy, they get the milk and apples. No apples, no toy. Kind of like broken record your mother once was, “If you don’t finish your vegetables, you don’t get dessert.”

The no fries/no soda option is what Santa Clara has in mind anyway. The ban is specific in that it bans restaurants from including toys in meal packages with more than 485 calories or 600 mg of sodium, as well as meals that have more than 35% of total calories from fat or 10% from added sugar. This would preclude chocolate milk and sugary juices in favor of low-fat milk and 100% fruit juice.

Ultimately it is up to us as parents to make wise choices for our children, whether it is the cereal we buy, choices in dining, or allowing our kids to sit in front of a computer, video game, TV instead of participating in a healthier activity. Parents need to set an example and provide the best nutrition they can based on the budget they have. While this can be a challenge, it can be done with a little effort and effort is what it will take to eliminate obesity in our children.

FI: While contagion of the Greek crisis so far had been manageable, the heat increased last week, with S&P inflating the negative rating drift in the euro zone by downgrading Greece three notches from BBB+ to BB+, Portugal two notches from A+ to A- and Spain one notch from AA+ to AA. Temporarily, Greek CDS have widened 210bp, Portuguese 100 bp, Irish 60bp and Spanish 30bp throughout the week before the hope for an agreement between Greece and the IMF let to a pronounced U-turn. In the atmosphere of uncertainty, Bunds have posted further gains with 10Y yields declining to 2.94%. The new Bund 3% Jul20 (currently yielding 3.02%) has received a fairly good demand and demand at the Italian BTP auction has been very good. This is a signal that markets are becoming more selective. Looking forward and as already mentioned above, we would expect a minor relief rally (tightening of periphery spreads in the eurozone) that could easily prove temporary. Apart from Greece, two elections are in the spotlight: UK general elections on May 6 and North-Rhine Westphalia elections in Germany on May 9. Important releases are scheduled in the US (labor market report and PMIs) while the EU calendar will be pretty empty. Finally, although we expect a very interesting Q&A session at the ECB meeting, from a practical perspective we would not expect a big impact on markets.

Hormone Replacement Therapy: Patch or Pill?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is regularly prescribed to women for the relief of hot flashes, night sweats, and other symptoms of menopause. Currently, around 1 million women are taking HRT, with an estimated three out of four using the pill form. Previous studies have shown HRT to be associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, breast cancer, and venous thromboembolism (VTE), a potentially fatal blood clot in the vein. While these studies spurred millions of women to abandon HRT drugs, they did not access the risk-benefit ratio for women or whether the risk varies with the type of therapy.

However, French researchers recently completed an investigation into the risk of blood clots from two different forms of HRT; the pill and the patch. Dr. Pierre-Yves Scarabin, director of research at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, and colleagues reviewed data from eight observational studies and nine randomized controlled trials on HRT and VTE and found that women who take oral HRT have double the risk of blood clots compared to women who use skin patches, and 2.5 times the risk of women taking no estrogen. They also found the risk to be significantly higher during the first year of treatment and in women who were overweight or predisposed toward developing blood clots. The increased risk translates into an additional 11 cases per 10,000 women per year based on combination HRT, or two extra cases per 10,000 for estrogen-only HRT, according to the study authors. Women who stopped taking HRT saw their risk return to normal.

The researchers said the reason for the risk difference between oral therapy and the patch might be due to the way estrogen is absorbed into the blood stream. When taken orally, estrogen enters through the digestive system and is processed by the liver. This process might impair the balance between clotting and anti-clotting factors in the blood. The authors added that since most of the data came from existing observational trials, the findings should be interpreted with caution.

EUR/USD extends above 1.3300 hits session high at 1.3315
The Euro is regaining the upside on Friday's European session o take back most of the ground lost on Tuesday and Wednesday as the pair's recovery from 1.3110 has reached levels above 1.3300 to hit 1.3315 session high so far.

On the upside, resistance levels lie at 1.3325, and above here, 1.3345/50 and 1.3385, all of them intra-day resistance levels). On the downside, support levels lie at 1.3220 (session low/intra-day resistance), and below here, today's low lies at 1.3180 (Apr 29 low) and 1.3140 (intra-day support).

EUR/GBP has also appreciated on European session. Decline from 0.8735 high on Thursday bounced at 0.8625 to reach session high at 0.8665. EUR/JPY recovery from 122.35 has extended through 122.85/95 area to 125.75 session high.

The major European indices all continue to post positive results today on the back of strong corporate earnings. The Paris-based CAC 40 is up the most at 0.94%. The FTSE 100 and DAX follow right behind at 0.56% and 0.36% respectively.

Corporate earnings are quelling the recent anxiety over Greek debt and possible contagion rampant in previous sessions. Uniliver reported forecast beating first quarter sales growth with shares rising close to 3%. Siemens gave a boost to the technology sector after posting strong first quarter profits. And finally Banco Santander buoyed the banking sector reporting a first quarter profit growth of 6%, pushing shares higher.

The USD/CHF is currently trading under the nine-month high of 1.0898 set yesterday on the back of a more than 180 pip rally by the dollar versus the Swiss franc. Since setting this high mark late in the American session, the pair slid downwards till it found support at 1.0843 and then moved back upwards to trade at the moment of publication near 1.0870.

Ian Coleman, FXstreet.com independent analyst, writes that the pair should see "a strong bullish day" with "a move up towards 1.1400."

The analyst places daily support levels at 1.0848, 1.0792 and 1.0769 and daily resistance levels at 1.0900, 1.1000 and 1.3540.

Social Media: Addiction Possibility for Your Teen

What do you think happens when 200 college students unplug…totally? This isn’t a trick question or a funny joke. It is exactly what happened at the University of Maryland. The International Center for Media and Public Agenda conducted a study, “Twenty-four Hours Unplugged,” in which 200 students were required to quiet their cell phones, laptops, desktops, netbooks, Kindles, iPads, televisions, radios. No surfing, no chat, no email, no Twitter, no Facebook, no Mafia Wars.

Not surprisingly, the experiment didn’t go over well with the students. They got cranky. They blogged about it afterward. According to the website A Day Without Media, those 200 students went overboard in describing their experience. Each was asked to write 300 words on the experience (60,000 total) but they had a lot more to say, to the tune of 111, 109 words. Many of those words included the reasons why they did not complete the 24 hours. What? There were some who couldn’t go 24 hours without the tether?

These responses go to show you how much phones, computers and televisions have invaded our life, to the point of not knowing what to do when they are not available. (Hello, a hike anyone? Picnic at the beach? Visit the museum? Visit the folks?) Students complained of feeling isolated, became anxious and fidgety, almost like withdrawl from an addiction. Many had never driven or exercised without music. They couldn’t set up a date, organize a softball practice or even a study group without what many think of as their “lifelines.” They had no way of knowing what was going on in the world, no Google News, no sportcasters with the latest MLB or NHL scores, no recent Lindsay Lohan sightings.

There were, of course, some good excuses for breaking the silence: one student had 3 of his textbooks as e-books. No ebooks meant no studying, and no research project was going to keep him from doing his homework. But these were few and far between.

According to the ICPA, “The major conclusion of this study is that the portability of all that media stuff has changed students’ relationship not just to news and information, but to family and friends — it has, in other words, caused them to make different and distinctive social, and arguably moral, decisions.”

I don’t happen to think that this is just a teen or twenty-something phenomenon. I took a trip last weeken, just an overnight to my nieces’ volleyball tournament, without my laptop. It’s the first time in four years that I have traveled without it, and I have to admit that it was painful. My work requires I be tethered to a computer to monitor breaking news and do assignments. It has accompanied me to the mountains, the lake, the desert, and even Las Vegas. I don’t go a day without it. I even brought it to my nephew’s wedding earlier this month so that I could download the pictures I was taking. But when I left it at home last weekend, I felt bereft. I could not pull out my SD card and check the action photos I was taking, couldn’t live stream the event for my brother who was sitting at home waiting for updates, or check Yelp for a good restaurant. So I understand what they were going through.

I don’t consider it an addiction for myself, but for those who live and breathe IM and texting, play Farmville and Mafia Wars, watch every episode of Law & Order or every bout of MMA available, for those who never shut off their phone, shut down their computer, or turn off the TV, then the possibility of addiction does exist. So beware. Watch your kids for signs of overuse, and then take them out to play, to hike, to get an ice cream. Offer them alternatives to the electronic world.

Market Review – Fundamental Perspective

With the end of the last week, the USD touched a two week high against the JPY as orders for U.S. durable goods excluding transportation items climbed 2.8% in March 2010 and sales of new homes increased 26.9%, the most in five decades. The JPY weakened 1.95% and reached 93.97 versus the USD. With the beginning of the current week, the USD could extend his upward trend and traded at 94.09. Furthermore the EUR declined against the USD on concerns that Greece`s request for a 60 billion USD bailout from the European Union will fail to ease investors concerns about the nation`s ability to end its financial crisis. The USD strengthened to 1.3359 from 1.3384. Also the other 15 most traded counterparts rose against the EUR as investors demand Greece pay almost triple what they charge Germany for its 10-year bond. The Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou told investors that they will lose their shirts if they bet the cash strapped nation will default, as his government moved toward securing emergency aid before dept payments come due in the middle of May. Furthermore the yield on the Greek two year note rose to its personal high and reached 10.57%. The JPY rose to 125.72 versus the EUR.

The GBP increased versus the USD and rose more than 4% from its year’s low at 1.4748. Last Friday, the GBP traded at 1.5368 and has been starting the week at 1.5386. Also against the EUR, the GBP had a good start in the week and rose to 0.8683. Furthermore at the end of the last week, the Office for National Statistics in the U.K. published, that the gross domestic product climbed 0.2% in the first quarter against the median estimate of 0.4%. Therefore it could be a surprise that the GBP could start the week with gains versus its major counterparts.

THE PRICE OF GOLD retained a slight weekly gain as the close approached in London on Friday, trading above $1141 an ounce while the Euro bounced – and world stock markets rose – following Greece's formal request for a joint European and IMF bail-out.

Gold priced in Euros spiked within 0.3% of April 9th's record, hitting €27,743 per kilo before easing back as the single currency rose.

British investors looking to buy gold, the price held at £743 an ounce – 0.3% higher from last Friday's finish – after UK data showed the economy growing half-as-fast as analysts forecast between Jan. and March, adding just 0.2% year-on-year.

Crude oil and broader commodities were little changed.

"Greece is asking for the activation of the support mechanism," said a letter sent this morning by finance minister Papaconstantinou to the European Commission, fellow Eurozone states, and the European Central Bank.

"The moment has come," Greek premier Papandreou told reporters, apparently catching the European Commission unawares.

First it denied receiving a formal bail-out request. Then the EC said it will take "some time" to trigger the rescue, currently agreed at a maximum €45 billion (£60bn).

Thursday had seen Greek bond prices sink to new crisis-lows, driving the yield offered by two-year debt above 10%.

As Greek bonds rallied on Friday, German Bund prices ticked lower alongside UK and US Treasury debt.

Germany's Dax rose 1.4% by lunchtime in Frankfurt. Athens' stock market jumped almost 2%.

"Although gold's Dollar-price may still be 6% below its late-2009 highs, in Euro terms gold prices are up 6% from their Dec-09 peak," notes Patrick Artus' team at French bank Natixis.

"German investors have not been put off by the all-time high expensiveness of gold in Euro-terms," reports Wolfgang Wrzesniok-Rossbach from Hanau-based refinery group Heraeus.

"The Greek financial crisis continues to drive investors here to the yellow metal."

Industrial demand, in contrast, "has shown a slight reduction in demand – current price levels appear to be simply too high," says Wrzesniok-Rossbach.

"Even at record prices of almost €865 an ounce" however, scrap-gold flows into the refinery "have slowed down in recent days," he adds.

Over in the credit-insurance market, the cost of protecting Portuguese government bonds also slipped back on Friday – together with Greek credit-default swaps – from yesterday's new record highs.

"The market believes that Greece will be forced to restructure its debt," says Simon Derrick at Bank of New York Mellon in London, and "The logic of such a situation for [Greek bond] investors is also simple enough:

"There is no last mover advantage in such a circumstance.

"We also note outflows just starting to build from Portuguese debt in recent days," Derrick is quoted by the FT's Alpha blog, "although they are still relatively modest."

Precious-metals analyst Walter de Wet at Standard Bank also notes fears of Euro-debt contagion today, writing "We doubt [the Greek rescue] would be enough to lift concerns over sovereign debt levels in certain European countries."

Even though the physical market is currently "quiet and directionless", de Wet reports, "Underlying uncertainty should continue to support gold."

Greece: Third time lucky?

EU Finance Ministers held yet another meeting on Greece, and have finally agreed on the details of the potential rescue package, which have been outlined in a press conference by Eurogroup head Juncker and EC Monetary and Economic Affairs Commissioner Rehn. The financing package looks substantial, it comes at rates that while concessional are still high enough to send a tough message and give Greece a strong incentive to put its house in order. My overall impression is that this should be enough to give Greek bonds some support in the near term, but this is just the beginning of an arduous adjustment process for Greece – the challenge of combining robust economic growth with draconian fiscal adjustment, both essential to reach debt sustainability, remains a formidable one. The agreement also leaves unchanged the underlying vulnerability of the eurozone, and the debate on institutional reforms will have to continue. It is also not clear yet to what extent the mechanism would constrain the ECB’s exit strategy, as the rates charged on EU loans are benchmarked on EURIBOR rates. Also, other large-deficit EU countries would be wise to take additional fiscal measures soon, to avoid becoming the next weak spot.

When will the rescue take place? Rehn and Juncker insisted on the “if and when needed” formula, but during the Q&A Rehn slipped and gave a more realistic “if, or rather when needed”. To be activated, the rescue mechanism will require a formal request by Greece, an assessment and opinion by the European Commission and the ECB, and a unanimous decision by EU leaders. It sounds laborious, but the groundwork has been laid in such a way as to make the following steps faster. Just yesterday, Greece formally requested the initiation of discussions with the IMF. While this does not constitute a formal request for either IMF or EU money, it is clearly the first necessary step in that direction. The key obstacle ahead now is agreeing on the IMF and EU conditions. Rehn indicated that on fiscal policy for 2010 the existing Greek program will be sufficient. However, detailed fiscal conditions will need to be agreed for 2011 and beyond, and the IMF will doubtlessly insist on tough structural conditions to create the conditions for growth and debt sustainability; pension reform and labor market liberalization are some of the likely candidates. Greece faces a few tough years ahead.

How much? The EU will offer up to EUR 30bn for the first year, which I assume would mean 12 months from the activation of the program, bringing us roughly to mid-2011. Over the same period, the IMF could probably provide up to an additional EUR 15bn, which would already be in excess of 2000% of quota – it seems extremely unlikely it could provide more. This would give a neat 2/3 to 1/3 split between EU and IMF financing, with the EU playing the greater role.

Note that the EU today could obviously not speak for the IMF, so we will have to wait for official confirmation from the IMF of when Greece applies for a program and how much financing would be provided.

This is a substantial amount of money. Greece faces about EUR 17bn in debt redemptions over the next six weeks, and another EUR 24bn in the first half of next year, plus the financing needed to cover the budget deficit over the entire period. Supported by this amount of official financing, Greece should be able to raise its additional funding on the market at least for a few months – its ability to do so over an extended period will of course depend on whether it fulfills the EU and IMF conditions. Notice that this will be a multi-year program, and Rehn explicitly indicated that financing for further years would be determined during the program negotiations. This confirms that Greece has a longer-term problem that does not disappear in virtue of today’s announcement.

At what price? The bottom line is that EU fixed-rate loans would be extended for a 3-year maturity at approximately 5% interest rate. This is arrived at by taking 3-year Euribor swap rates as a benchmark and adding a 300bp spread plus an additional 50bp spread to cover operational expenses. Variable rate loans would carry similar spreads over 3M Euribor, which is currently at about 0.64%. It is not clear to what extent this mechanism might constrain the ECB’s exit strategy. The loans will as usual be disbursed in tranches. To the extent that they are at flexible rates, they would of course reflect movements in the 3-month Euribor rate, which is now extremely low. If they are at fixed rates, either the rate is determined based on the Euribor prevailing when the tranche is disbursed, in which case they may rise well above 5%, or the rate is determined based on the Euribor prevailing when the program is activated. But in the latter case, the rate would fall further and further below market levels. In other words, if the ECB proceeds to push market rates up, then either Greece will face higher rates on the EU loans, endangering debt sustainability, or the subsidy element will increase, endangering political sustainability of the arrangement.

Rehn and Juncker were adamant in stating that 5% is not concessional, and not a subsidy. The Orwellian rationale provided in the press conference is that the rate is above that charged by the IMF, and since IMF rates are arguably concessional, something higher is not. Yet 5% is well below current market rates, which means that some residual political and social resistance in Germany cannot be ruled out. However, 5% at 3-years is a high rate: Germany pays about 1.3%, Italy about 1.8%, Portugal about 2.4% and Ireland about 2.3%. In this sense, it is fair to say that while the loans are concessional, they are extended at a rate that still provides a strong incentive for Greece to put its house in order and win back the market’s confidence to at least the same extent that Ireland has.

Another way of looking at it is that even with the EU’s help, Greece will need to implement tough actions to both reduce the fiscal deficit and restore competitiveness if it wants to bring its debt back on a sustainable path.

In other words, the medium-term debt sustainability challenge remains intact. Greece seems relatively well positioned to meet the EU fiscal targets for 2010. But that just means that at the end of this year the country will be in a deeper recession (at least -4% GDP contraction), with a budget deficit still close to 9% of GDP, and having done little to restore competitiveness. The challenge of combining robust economic growth with draconian fiscal adjustment, both essential to reach debt sustainability, remains a formidable one. The relatively high rate is also a powerful signal that Germany is serious: together with the highly visible and transparent process of IMF reviews, it guarantees that Greece will really need to abide by the agreed conditions or risk a cutting off of the official financing – it is hard to see Germany agreeing to a renewal of EU loans in case Greece’s program veers substantially off track.

The Pound has stretched higher at European session opening, breaking through 1.5435/40 resistance to extend rebound from 1.5190 week low to 1.5475 so far, which according to Karen Jones, technical analyst at Commerzbank, is expected to fail at 1.5690/5710, and resume longer-term downtrend.

The pair might fond interim resistance at 1.5525/75, and strong resistance at 1.5690/5710, where Jones expects failure: "Rallies will find interim resistance at 1.5525/75 and strong resistance at 1.5690/1.5710. If challenged we would expect failure and the resumption of the downmove from this juncture."

On the downside, 1.5283 and 1.5190 are key levels to maintain near-term uptrend, says Jones: "GBP/USD remains underpinned near term by its 20 day ma at 1.5283 currently. This together with 1.5190 (this weeks low) must hold for a near term upside bias to be preserved."
